Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams is looking to take his game to the next level with new head coach Ben Johnson. Williams, last year's No. 1 overall pick, had a promising rookie season throwing 3,541 yards, 22 touchdowns and six interceptions while showing flashes of what he could do as a franchise quarterback.
During his rookie season, Williams worked with three separate offensive coordinators: Shane Waldron, Thomas Brown, and Chris Beatty, as well as two head coaches in Matt Eberflus and Brown, who was elevated to interim head coach. Having little to no connection, rhythm, or success with Eberflus at the helm, Williams is hoping to have a much better rapport with his new head coach in Johnson.
In his first meeting with the media during the team's offseason program, Williams said his initial connection with Johnson was reminiscent to what he had with his college coach, Lincoln Riley. Williams started his collegiate career with Riley at Oklahoma then joined him at USC, where Williams would go on to win the Heisman Trophy in 2022.
"I think I have a knack for being able to tell when I vibe with somebody and connect well with somebody," Williams said about his initial meeting with his new coach. "I would say it was a pretty similar feeling to when I met Lincoln [Riley] five years ago. A very similar feeling and obviously he's different in his own unique ways, but a similar feeling for sure."
That should be a sign of good things to come that Johnson has already hit it off with Williams. The difference now is Johnson will be tasked with elevating Williams to another level in the NFL, which will be key to making the Bears a contender.
