C.J. Gardner-Johnson reveals perfect reason for joining Bills originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Buffalo Bills have been active in free agency, with the franchise looking to fill as many holes as they can before the draft.

Receiver was finally sorted, and then the Bills turned their attention to the defense and the secondary for Jim Leonhard.

Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was signed, in a move that many see as a shrewd piece of business for the franchise, as the defense has to catch up to Joe Brady's high-octane offense.

And for Gardner-Johnson, he revealed why he chose Buffalo.

"A chance to win with a good quarterback. Josh [Allen] is phenomenal," Gardner-Johnson said via the Bills' official website. "[Be] a part of a team that has a fighting chance every Sunday, and I just have to [rebuild] and [find] my identity again … go out there [and] just be you playing football with guys that [have] been playing at a high caliber. Surrounding myself with superstars."

Bills' defense a key watch in 2026

After years of having the offense that was the main reason the franchise was in the playoffs and pushing for a Super Bowl, now the defense is tasked with trying to pick up the slack.

With Gardner-Johnson, hopefully, he can bring some high-level play to Buffalo in a year when all eyes will be on the franchise in its first season post-Sean McDermott.

The franchise made the move to fire McDermott. Now they must at least manage what he did in Brady's first year.

And Gardner-Johnson will hopefully play his role as the defense looks to ease the workload on the offense.
