Antetokounmpo and Lillard had spoken long before, recruiting one another to their respective cities, and Antetokounmpo famously picked Lillard first for his team in the 2023 All-Star game over Holiday. That's not to say Antetokounmpo demanded the trade for Lillard, or signed off on moving Holiday. But multiple high-ranking Bucks officials said decision-makers would talk with the star, bounce ideas off him. They knew what he wanted, or would be OK with, when it came to coaching or personnel decisions. Explicit questions need not be posed. "I will never, ever be in a position to affect somebody's life,” Antetokounmpo insisted to the Journal Sentinel. “I can’t do it. My heart doesn't go to that. Sometimes I say my opinion. But I would never push the button.”
