Feb. 2—The Lake Mills girls wrestling team took to Crestwood Friday night for the 1A Region 3 tournament with hopes of sending a host of competitors to the state tournament.

At the end of the day, two Bulldogs were still standing, punching their tickets to the state tournament. Sophomore Afton Dean took first place at 170 pounds and senior Piper Kjeldahl came in second at 155 pounds.

Dean dominated through each match in her bracket. After receiving byes through the first two rounds, Dean won with three straight pinfalls to claim first place. The first came against Isla Henkes of MFL MarMac in the first period. In the semifinals Dean pinned Waukon's Claire Hankes in the first period, and in the championship match Dean defeated Kayma Burleson via pinfall in the second period.

Like Dean, Kjeldahl received a bye in the first and second rounds. In the quarterfinals, she defeated Harper DeMaris of St. Ansgar in a 9-1 major decision. Kjeldahl then won via pinfall in the semifinals, defeating New Hampton/Turkey Valley's Raelen Manderfield in the third period. In the championship, she fell victim to a pinfall herself in the final seconds of the match against Miley Walz from East Buchanan. The loss sent Kjeldahl to the consolation championship, where she defeated Jenny Ramirez from West Fork in an 8-1 decision.

Ten other Bulldogs also participated in the tournament. While three of them placed in the top four, none qualified to move on to the state tournament.
