Aug. 23—GRAND FORKS — Buddy Kofoid has raced at River Cities Speedway only five times. The way it's going for the California driver, he'll keep coming back.
Kofoid stormed from the ninth starting spot to win the 40-lap World of Outlaws feature Friday night at River Cities Speedway — a victory that paid the Penngrove, Calif., driver $12,000.
Kofoid swept the two WoO races at RCS this season, becoming only the third driver to win two features in a row at The Bullring. Donny Schatz and Craig Dollansky are the other two drivers to accomplish that feat as the Outlaws wrapped up their 35th visit to RCS.
"This is one of my favorite tracks for sure," said Kofoid. "I come from a track like this, so I tend to favor them a little bit more. And our car is really good on them. River Cities is going to be one of my favorite race tracks because of the way it races."
It was Kofoid's ninth WoO win of the season as he is second in season points behind David Gravel.
Kofoid, starting ninth, needed only 19 laps to take the lead. However, Kofoid took the lead in a strange manner.
Sheldon Haudenschild, looking for his first WoO win at RCS, was at the point when he tangled with Skyler Gee's car on the back straightaway. Haudenschild's front end lifted after making contact with Gee, sending the No. 17 sprint into the infield.
No yellow flag was waved after the contact. Kofoid, who was in second, took over and dominated the rest of the way, beating Gravel to the flag stand by 1.152 seconds.
"I would have liked to race it out with Sheldon because he is really good here," said Kofoid. "I was catching Sheldon and could move around. I could run the top or the bottom. It was a crazy deal but sometimes you're going to have deals like that on a crazy track."
Despite the wind and dry conditions Friday, the track was fast. WoO officials delayed the start of the show by an hour in anticipation of reduced wind speeds.
Kofoid's top time came on lap 30 at 11.045 seconds, second only to Gravel's 11.011 seconds.
"It was a tricky track," added Kofoid. "It was wet but the track widened out and we could race around it."
Oftentimes in WoO features, the winner usually races in the dash that sets the first eight starting spots of the feature. But Kofoid missed the dash by one spot. Still, he made his way to the front quickly before capitalizing on Haudenschild's misfortune.
Carson Macedo, a past WoO feature winner at RCS, was third, followed by Logan Schuchart, who started 14th. Pole-sitter Emerson Axsom, making his first appearance at RCS, rounded out the top five.
Mark Dobmeier, in one of his best WoO showings in recent seasons, finished sixth. Overall, it was a good night for the career wins leader at RCS. He started 10th.
"It was a good run for us," said Dobmeier. "We've been kind of battling all year, but we got some speed in this car the past two weeks. We put a different car together and got some things going. Honestly, we probably had a car that could have won the race if the driver made some better choices."
Schatz, who has won 12 WoO features in Grand Forks, finished eighth.
There were 41 cars on hand for the night. Dobmeier was the last of the 41 to qualify. But he qualified sixth overall at 10.416 seconds. Macedo had the top qualifying time at 10.300 seconds.
NLRA late models complemented the WoO sprints. Dustin Strand continued his winning ways at RCS, capturing the 25-lap feature.
He started on the pole and beat Joey Pederson to the checkered flag by 4.645 seconds. Tom Corcoran, in his strongest run of the season, finished third while Tyler Peterson and Ryan Corbett rounded out the top five.
"The track definitely was the fastest it's been all year," said Strand.
