The collapse the Bucs suffered at the end of the 2025 season was so bad that it was thought that perhaps the team would be looking for a fresh start. Whether that be through changes in the front office or coaching staff, or even the roster, it felt like change was coming.
As it would turn out, the coaching staff and front office would remain in place, but the roster would not be as lucky.
Some moves were inevitable in hindsight, such as wide receiver Mike Evans leaving due to a belief the team wasn't close to winning a Super Bowl. Other moves meant just not retaining many of the players who had hit the open market, while also bringing in some new faces in key areas.
Bucs head coach Todd Bowles talked about the roster turnover during a session with media at the NFL's Annual League Meeting. He explained, "We thought we had to make a few tweaks. Coaching-wise and playing-wise, and we thought we got better, and we got different, and we got better. . .A'Shawn (Robinson) brings a lot more toughness, stoutness, and sturdiness from that standpoint. Rashad (White) was a very good back for us on third down, and could block. (Kenneth) Gainwell will bring a bit more versatility from a 3-team prong standpoint, in running, catching, blocking, and special teams. Not that Rashad wasn't great, because he was. And so you're trying to build those guys, you'll never replace Lavonte (David), but (Alex) Anzalone, in his own right, is a very good linebacker in his league. And he wears a green dot and commands respect as well, so he's gonna be very good."
The moves they made do not generate a lot of splash, but they have a certain quality. The team itself is going to look different in these areas, especially at linebacker, but Anzalone should do well to help negate some of that disappointment from David's retirement.
