The Tampa Bay Buccaneers appear to have their running back hierarchy largely established entering the 2026 season. Bucky Irving emerged as one of the NFL's most productive young backs in his rookie season and dealt with multiple injuries in his sophomore season, but is healthy and hungry to pick up where he left off, while veteran Kenneth Gainwell was brought in during free agency to provide versatility and experience behind him.

That leaves many wondering where Sean Tucker fits into the equation.

While touches may be harder to come by than in previous years, Tucker still possesses a skill set that could allow him to carve out a valuable niche in Tampa Bay's offense. At 5'10 and roughly 210 pounds, Tucker brings a different physical profile than Irving and Gainwell. While Irving thrives on his vision, elusiveness, and ability to create explosive plays, similar to Gainwell, who thrives on getting the ball in space and navigating tight spaces. Tucker offers a sturdier frame that can handle the more physical aspects of the running game.

That could make him an ideal complement in certain situations rather than a direct competitor for touches.

The Buccaneers have plenty of weapons capable of moving the ball between the redzone but converting third and short situations and punching the football into the end zone requires a different type of runner. Tucker's size, lower body strength, and elite balance make him a natural candidate for those opportunities.

Tucker has flashed the ability to finish runs through contact and pick up tough yards after initial contact. If he can continue improving his pass protection and show consistency in camp, he could earn the trust of the coaching staff in critical situations where physicality matters most.

There's also value in having a back who can wear down defenses late in games. With Irving likely carrying a significant workload and Gainwell expected to see snaps as both a runner and receiver, Tucker could become the fresh-legged option the Buccaneers turn to in the fourth quarter when protecting a lead. His path to playing time may come through maximizing a specialized role. Tucker could become one of Tampa Bay's most important situational weapons.

In a backfield led by Irving and supported by Gainwell, there is still room for Tucker to make his mark.
