The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have enjoyed their recent run of free agent hits at the quarterback position. They started their hot run with a tenure with Tom Brady, which led to an eventual Super Bowl. From there, they landed Baker Mayfield with a chip on his shoulder, who has played the best years of his career in Tampa Bay.
However, heading into 2026, it will be the final season of Mayfield's contract, and he is being vocal about two things. One, he wants to stay in Tampa Bay; two, he doesn't want to keep the talks going into training camp. The deadline in Mayfield's mind is closing, and now another outlet is suggesting they need to lock down an extension sooner rather than later.
Bleacher Report's Moe Moton wrote up extension candidates for every NFL team, and for the Bucs, he hinted at their star quarterback. He writes, "Although Mayfield told reporters that contract talks with the Buccaneers 'are not anywhere close' to his expectations, it's notable that he's at least in negotiations with the team in the final year of his non-guaranteed deal. Head coach Todd Bowles said, "There's absolutely no question" that he wants Mayfield to be his long-term quarterback. In all likelihood, the two sides will find a middle ground by the start of training camp."
The team is going to have to make a decision, but all trends point to the team and Mayfield finding an extension. However, if they do seem ready to make a switch and want to wait and see how 2026 goes, then the 2027 NFL Draft could have some answers.
