To properly answer the question of where Ohio State stands in the NCAA Tournament field, we would of course need to do an entire bracketology and compare resumes of dozens of teams. We don't quite have the space for that here, but depending on how the rest of the season goes we might come close to that when the Big Ten tournament rolls around. For now, though, let's just look at Ohio State's tournament resume and how that resume usually compares to bubble teams.

The Buckeyes have played 21 games this season, and in those 21 games they have built a resume that is tailor-made to sit right on the bubble. Their NET ranking is No.41, which is right on the edge of at-large range generally. Their KenPom ranking is similar. But it's not just the NET that matters. It's the whole resume, which means the wins and losses a team picks up. And the Buckeyes have not made the most of their opportunities, but that's also somewhat good news––there aren't too many weak spots on the resume, either.

The NCAA rates wins and losses in a resume in four "quadrants." From the handy explainer on the NCAA website:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

Now, in a way things are really simple. Quad 4 losses destroy a resume. More than one of those and a team has basically no chance of getting in. On the flip side, Quad 1 wins are what get teams in the tournament. Tournament teams can survive a Quad 3 loss or two, usually, as long as there's meat at the top of the resume. And Quad 2 losses add up, but usually aren't that big a deal (especially home ones).

So where does Ohio State's resume stack? Right now, there are no bad losses; the Buckeyes are 10-0 vs Quads 3 and 4. But there aren't many great wins, either. Ohio State is 1-6 in Quad 1 games, the lone win against Northwestern, a team right on the edge of falling into Quad 2 as it is. So, in short, Ohio State's resume has no major downsides, but it has no real meat, either.

Where does that leave Ohio State for the NCAA Tournament? With 11 games to go, it leaves them firmly at the edge of the bubble. The good news, though, is that the rest of the season provides plenty of opportunities for meat. As of right now, the Buckeyes have two Quad 3 games left (Maryland and USC), two Quad 2 games, and seven Quad 1 games. That's a whole lot of opportunities to add serious meat to this resume.

Remember, though, that no one's resume is final at this point. A team that is Quad 1 now might fall out of that quadrant in its final ten games. Or one of those prior Quad 2 wins can move up to Quad 1 if that team does well the rest of the way (looking at you, West Virginia).

We'll be back to check on Ohio State's resume next week, maybe noting how the rest of the bubble moved in the process.
