The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are reuniting with cornerback Roman Parodie, signing him to a contract before this week's joint practice with the New York Jets.
Parodie spent last preseason with the Buccaneers after signing as an undrafted free agent. He appeared in two games: one against the Buffalo Bills and the other against the Tennessee Titans. The 6-foot-2 corner logged five tackles and returned an interception for 39 yards in the Titans game.
No other NFL team signed Parodie after his stint with Tampa Bay. He went to the UFL and played for the Houston Gamblers.
Tampa Bay waived Kemon Hall, whom it added in the offseason, to make this signing work. Parodie's addition comes at a crucial time in training camp as the injury bug has plagued the position.
Chase Lucas and Hall, who were signed for depth early in the offseason, suffered injuries. Benjamin Morrison, who was supposed to be a player to watch in training camp, has not participated since the last day OTAs due to a hamstring injury.
The Buccaneers bet on internal improvement from Zyon McCollum and Morrison to lead the secondary. But Morrison, who's under pressure to have a breakout season, has proven unreliable due to health.
It's the second-straight year he has missed significant portions of the offseason due to injury.
The position hasn't suffered since he's been sidelined. McCollum leads the team in interceptions, Jacob Parrish is likely the second starter next to his teammate with Morrison out, and rookies Keionte Scott and Ayden Garnes have impressed.
Garnes has made the most noise as an undrafted rookie. He matched up against wide receiver Emeka Egbuka during Friday morning's practice and broke up a pass thrown by quarterback Baker Mayfield. It was an impressive stop against the starting offense.
He's grabbed a few interceptions throughout camp, too. Garnes intercepted fellow rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels on Tuesday, and caught another against Mayfield in one-on-one drills on Monday.
Parodie will become a depth addition and brings familiarity with his experience learning Coach Todd Bowles' defense last year. He's adding size to the secondary with his 6-foot-2, 240-pound frame.
In college, he was a four-year starter for the Ohio Bobcats. The Fort Lauderdale, Florida, native ended his career with 124 tackles (75 solo), 24 pass deflections (10 in 2024), one sack, one forced fumble and three interceptions.
There are two joint practices on Tuesday and Wednesday against the Jets. Parodie will participate and could see action in Friday's preseason opener.
