You know you are one of the greatest in your profession when you last in it for 37 years. For Tampa Bay Buccaneers play-by-play announcer Gene Deckerhoff, he has done just that while giving entire generations of fans lines and memories that will last another 37 years.
However, on Saturday, it will be the last time that Deckerhoff will be gracing Bucs' fans' ears as he is retiring from the broadcast booth.
The Bucs announced his decision to retire on Wednesday, Dec. 31, and shared some of his best calls in the process. Fans will remember him for calls such as "Alstott up the gut!" and "There it is! The dagger is in! We’re going to win the Super Bowl!" Those are just some of the memories he created for fans, but then again, they know if they included them all, we would already be in the new year.
The team also shared, "Deckerhoff has served as the voice of the Buccaneers for 37 seasons, a span that ranks as the third-longest play-by-play tenure for an NFL club, behind only the Eagles' Merrill Reese and the Cowboys' Brad Sham. Since joining the organization in 1989, Deckerhoff has been on the call for more than 750 Buccaneers preseason, regular season and playoff games, and has bellowed his signature, 'Touchdown, Tampa Bay!' call on more than 1,100 occasions."
The Bucs play the Panthers on Saturday, January 3, in the final game of his broadcasting career.
