Bryce Eldridge's walk-off grand slam capped the San Francisco Giants' history-making comeback.
How rare was the Giants' 11-10 victory over the Washington Nationals at Oracle Park on Wednesday?
Consider the Giants trailed 9-1 in the eighth inning, and MLB clubs had dropped 4,291 consecutive games when trailing by at least eight runs at that stage, according to The Associated Press. The Giants scored five runs in each of the final two frames, highlighted by Eldridge's grand slam. It was the rookie's fourth of the season.
The Giants became the first squad to trail by at least eight runs in the eighth inning and win via grand slam.
Giants third baseman Matt Chapman collected four hits, including two home runs. Back-to-back, eighth-inning homers by Chapman and Rafael Devers fueled the rally.
In the ninth, Luis Arraez and Chapman opened with consecutive doubles, cutting the Giants' deficit to 10-7. After a Devers walk and a single by Jung Hoo Lee, who extended his hitting streak to 18 games, Eldridge, a Northern Virginia native who grew up a Nationals fan, followed with his historic grand slam off reliever Mitchell Parker (2-3).
