The Boston Bruins are looking to add some defensive help and are now linked to two defensemen from the New Jersey Devils.

Boston is holding onto a playoff spot and is expected to be buyers ahead of Friday’s trade deadline. The Bruins have been linked to plenty of players, and now NHL insider James Murphy of RG.org reported on Wednesday evening that the team is showing interest in Devils defenseman Simon Nemec and Johnathan Kovacevic.

“Per multiple NHL sources on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, the Boston Bruins’ shopping list on the NHL trade market had not changed. General Manager Don Sweeney and his staff remained focused on a top-four right-shot defenseman and a top-six forward (winger or center), and in that order. …

“Getting back to the Boston Bruins and their search for a top-four right-shot defenceman, one trusted NHL source told RG to keep an eye on the New Jersey Devils, and specifically defencemen Johnathan Kovacevic and 2022 first-round pick Simon Nemec.”

The source told Murphy that the Bruins and Devils have indeed had early talks, and those are two players that Bruins general manager Don Sweeney likes.

Kovacevic is in the first year of his five-year, $20 million deal, so he’d be a long-term answer on Boston’s blue line. He was injured to begin the season as he didn’t make his season debut until Jan. 11, but Kovacevic is a shutdown defenseman.

Nemec, meanwhile, was selected second overall in 2022, but he has struggled to carve out a role with the team. He’s in the final year of his entry-level deal, and Nemec’s name has come up in trade rumors ahead of the deadline. The right-shot defenseman has recorded nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points in 48 games this season.

Ahead of Friday’s trade deadline, it’s clear that the Bruins are looking to bolster their blue line for a playoff push.
