If the Boston Bruins are able to best the Buffalo Sabres in the first round of the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, it will be because of the play of star goaltender Jerey Swayman.

Swayman was in the net for 31 of the Bruins 45 wins. He earned the start in 54 of the team's 82 regular-season games, or roughly two in every three.

So the fact that the Buffalo Sabres only saw him once in the entire season is surprising. The fact that the one appearance came all the way back on October 11, in the third game of the season, is downright improbable.

The Bruins went on to win that game 3-1, with Swayman making saves on 21 of the 22 pucks he saw. Boston and Buffalo met three other times in the regular season. The Bruins took the season series 3-1, with backup goalie Joonas Korpisalo getting the start in each of the other three games.

Head coach Marco Sturm has not revealed how he intends to handle the playing time split in net for the opening series against the Sabres. Typically, NHL coaches abandon the established goalie rotation when it comes to playoff time.

In 2024, Swayman earned the start in 12 of 13 games, including 11 in a row, even with the talented Linus Ullmark in the locker room.

If it comes down to Swayman starting every game of this series, the Bruins will be thankful that Buffalo hasn’t seen him since early October.
