The Cleveland Brownstraded All-World pass rusher Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams. That is old news now. However, when the trade was officially processed and published to the league's transaction wire, there was an odd wrinkle present in the fine print.
The agreed-upon trade compensation was just as reported: Garrett to the Rams for Jared Verse, a 2027 first round pick, a 2028 second round pick, and a 2029 third round pick. However, next to the 2029 third round pick on the transaction wire, there was a conditional tag in parentheses.
This left many wondering exactly what that condition could be and how it would impact the Browns. It turns out that Cleveland dot com's Mary Kay Cabot has the answer.
According to the Browns insider, the condition that was agreed upon between the Browns and the Rams is that the third round pick in 2029 will become a first round pick if Garrett is traded back into the AFC North. This is highly unlikely to happen, given that it would give the Rams two years to trade him, which would be an insane thought after just spending a ton to acquire him.
However, what this does do is disincentivize the likes of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, or Cincinnati Bengals from pursuing Garrett if things go south in Los Angeles. More importantly, it disincentivizes the Rams from negotiating with those three teams if they seek a way to get Garrett off the roster for whatever reason.
