The chatter surrounding free-agent pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney’s visit to the Cleveland Browns facility yesterday has been the talk of the town. Following practice today, defensive end Jared Verse fielded questions regarding the Clowney’s potential reunion with the team, sparked by a line of questioning from Cleveland.com reporter Mary Kay Cabot.
Verse didn't hide his respect for the veteran edge rusher, opening up about the former number one overall pick’s impact on his own football journey.
“Clowney is obviously one of the best pass rushers I’ve ever watched,” Verse said. “Watching his film from college, that’s one of the big reasons why I play DE.”
Expanding on what adding Clowney would mean for the defensive line unit, Verse emphasized the immense value of veteran leadership.
“Having that dude in the room will be monumental for me,” Verse explained. “You know, having that vet presence is bigger than just my own. Having that vet presence, someone who’s been around the game, someone who can teach you things, that’s why I went to the Sack Summit. To be around Von Miller, Maxx Crosby, all these high-end rushers because you can learn so much from them.”
When Cabot closed her session by asking if Verse had a chance to connect with Clowney during yesterday’s visit, Verse revealed he missed him entirely.
“I didn’t even get to see him,” Verse admitted. “I heard about it by word of mouth.”
During his stint with the Browns from 2021-2022 opposite Myles Garrett, Clowney benefited heavily from the mandatory double-teams and sliding protections directed toward Garrett. He racked up nine sacks in 2021 and the tandem combined for 39 sacks over his two seasons with the team.
Andrew Berry is likely hoping that pairing Clowney with Jared Verse would replicate that dynamic, and help ease the loss of Myles Garrett on the stat sheet.
