The Cleveland Browns have restructured the contract of cornerback Denzel Ward. This comes after the Browns had already restructured the contract of quarterback Deshaun Watson to clear $36 million in cap space.
This move was just a minor restructure, creating $2 million in cap space. This brings the Browns up to around $30 million in spending money, with the NFL free agency tampering period starting on Monday.
The Browns could have cleared a full $15 million had they restructured the entire base salary of Ward. However, the team opted to convert just a small part of it instead, converting that $2 million from base salary to bonus. Over the Cap's Jason Fitzgerald was the first to break the news of Cleveland's newest contract restructure.
This puts an end to any silly trade rumors floating around involving Ward as well.
This is a great question. The author had theorized that the Browns were going to do so. Instead, they opted for a small restructuring. Browns fans are asking the same thing on social media, and Over the Cap's Fitzgerald had an answer that checks a lot of boxes.
When asked on X why the Browns would only restructure a small part, Fitzgerald responded that the team could be looking to extend Ward in the near future.
This adds up as Ward only has one year left on his contract after the 2026 season with the Browns. If his play stays as strong as it has been over the last half-decade, the Browns will have no choice but to extend Ward to keep one of the NFL's best cornerbacks in the building.

Why didn't the Browns restructure Ward's entire base salary?

My assumption is they are looking to extend him at some point
