Cleveland Browns new head coach Todd Monken was officially introduced on Tuesday. Monken, who spent three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, signed with the Browns to replace Kevin Stefanski. The veteran coach inherited a complex situation, and his arrival didn’t exactly help fix things.
As soon as the reports of his arrival came to light, defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz reportedly said goodbye to people within the franchise and said he was “done” with the team. Schwartz aimed at getting the head coach job, but it was Monken who won the race.
During his introductory press conference, Monken explained his approach to the defense, the team’s most valuable asset for several years now. He threw shade at Schwartz, saying that he prepared to coach Myles Garrett and Co., not to work alongside Schwartz.
“And I said this to the other guys, I didn’t think I’d say it but I am gonna say it: When I was preparing for the Cleveland Browns, I wasn’t chipping Jim Schwartz, I was chipping Myles Garrett. When I was sliding in protection to the outside linebackers, to Grant Delpit if they were blitzing off the edge, I was sliding the protection for the players. When I was worried about throwing to the right at Denzel Ward or Tyson Campbell to the left, that’s who I was worried about.”
Todd Monken will have his first head coaching experience with the Browns. Many criticized the move, but the former Ravens OC sounded confident about his chances. He announced he won’t change the system, regardless of who stays or leaves.
“First off, my anticipation is we are not going to change the system,” Monken said. “Very difficult to go against. Not planning on changing the system. We’re built for the system that they’re in currently. I am not gonna get into staffing, because now is not the time to get into that. But they can be rest assured that we’re going to be in the same system. We’re still going to let them attack, we’re still going to let them play free. I can’t see another way.”
This could become a major issue for the Browns. Schwartz is reportedly unafraid of making things ugly.
