History will be made on August 1 with the official birth of the Women’s Pro Baseball League. It will be the first professional baseball league for women since 1954.
Count Becky Brouse Davis among the more excited fans anticipating a new era of professional baseball. A lifelong sports fan and former college athlete, Brouse Davis began researching the league shortly after its announcement in December.
And she discovered a problem.
“I just started getting really hyped myself about the league coming, so I just started looking for information,” she said. “The league put some stuff out there, but there just wasn’t really anybody covering it in a meaningful way.”
Considering the significance of the league’s creation, that didn’t sit well with Brouse Davis. So she decided to do her part to break the silence.
She has been the Sports Information Director at WVU Tech since 2013. Now she’s using her extensive experience in that field to help spread the word about the WPBL and the players involved.
She launched her own website, thisiswomensbaseball.com, in the spring. The reception has been more than she ever anticipated.
“I’m gaining tons of followers each day, lots of shares, comments. Just getting people excited about it,” she said.
She also distributes consistent content through several social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. It can be found by searching This is Women’s Baseball.
“I put out posts on social media usually daily,” she said. “I’ve got a newsletter going weekly, which I keep gaining follower subscriptions for that. … I didn’t know much about newsletters beforehand, but I usually get over 50 percent people reading it, and people told me that is really good. At this point I only have about 300 subscribers, but that’s still pretty good, I think, for just starting.”
The website, independent of the WPBL, includes feature stories, news from the league and nuggets from a historical perspective.
Brouse Davis’ work has caught the attention of the WPBL itself. Also, The IX Sports, a website devoted exclusively to the coverage of women’s sports, has reached out to Brouse Davis about a possible collaboration.
The WPBL will be the nation’s first organized women’s baseball since the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League 72 years ago. The AAGPBL, immortalized by the 1992 movie “A League of Their Own,” ran from 1943-1954 and was created to keep the sport in the nation’s conscience as young men, including professional baseball players, were being drafted into the military and serving in World War II.
The inaugural version of the WPBL will consist of four teams. They will be from Boston, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco, but all games will be played at historic Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Illinois.
Each team will play 30 games before the playoffs in mid-September.
Brouse Davis and her husband Brad plan to be in Illinois for Opening Day and several other games thoughout the first week. Once the season starts, she will continue her current content and supplement it with game coverage.
