The Denver Broncos made a surprising pick in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft on Thursday night, adding Texas cornerback Jahdae Barron at 20th overall.
The Broncos were widely expected to use their first-round pick on a cornerback, but the team stuck to their big board and picked Barron over running backs Omarion Hampton (North Carolina) and TreVeyon Henderson (Ohio State).
Cornerback was not believed to be one of Denver's biggest needs, but he was too good of a value to pass up at No. 20. Jeff Risdon had Barron ranked as the No. 2 cornerback in this year's draft, only trailing No. 2 overall pick Travis Hunter (Colorado).
So, where does Barron (5-11, 194 pounds) fit in the Broncos' secondary? Pat Surtain will obviously remain the team's No. 1 outside cornerback. Barron could replace Riley Moss as the No. 2 outside cornerback, but he might be best suited to play in the slot. If he ends up playing as the team's nickelback, Barron would replace Ja'Quan McMillian as CB3.
Denver might also consider having Barron on the outside and moving Moss to the slot. Either way, Barron figures to soon emerge as one of the team's top three cornerbacks.
Here's an updated (projected) cornerback depth chart for the Broncos.
Barring trades, up next for the Broncos are pick Nos. 51 (Round 2) and 85 (Round 3) on Day 2 of the NFL draft on Friday evening. We will track all of Denver's picks on Broncos Wire.
