Broncos Wire's 90-man offseason roster series begins today with a look at sixth-year pass rusher Jonathon Cooper, No. 0.
Before the Broncos: Cooper (6-4, 257 pounds) came out of Ohio State, playing from 2016-20 with the Buckeyes. Cooper appeared in 46 games, appearing as a pass rusher and defensive lineman. Cooper recorded 76 total tackles (45 solo, 31 assisted), 15 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and two pass deflections in college. Cooper's production led him to be a seventh-round pick (239th overall) of the Broncos in the 2021 NFL draft.
Broncos tenure: After being selected by Denver, Cooper began his Broncos tenure playing in 16 games (five starts) his rookie season, making 38 total tackles (22 solo, 16 assisted, four tackles for loss), recording two sacks and recovering one fumble. In each subsequent season, Cooper had more and more of an impact, tag-teaming pass-rushing duties alongside Nik Bonitto. After years of work, Cooper finally recorded double-digit sacks for the first time in 2024 (10.5). Last year, Cooper was second on the team in sacks (eight), behind Bonitto (14). Cooper's outstanding contributions helped the Denver defense to break the franchise record for sacks in back-to-back years in 2024 and 2025.
Chance to make the 53-man roster: Uncertain future. When this roster bio was originally scheduled, we noted that Cooper will look to get back to double-digit sacks in 2026 after he recorded just one half-sack in the final seven games of the 2025 regular season. His status is less certain after an alleged domestic violence incident earlier this month. Cooper pleaded not guilty to the charges and he has a motion hearing set for July 6 and a trail set for July 22. Until the legal process has completed, Cooper's future with the team will be uncertain. He could face potential discipline from the NFL, depending on the results of the court process, but we will wait for trail results before projecting Cooper's 2026 status.
