The Denver Broncos held a mandatory minicamp this week and, for the first time this spring, quarterback Bo Nix (ankle) participated with media members in attendance.
“It was great,” Nix said when asked what it was like to be back on the field. “They’ve been practicing for a couple of weeks. Today's my first time kind of getting out there and sort of going through everything with them. But it was great.”
Nix underwent an initial ankle surgery after the divisional round of the NFL playoffs, and he underwent a clean-up surgery in April that delayed his return to the field. He explained why he had a second surgery after Tuesday’s practice.
“[I had] the first [operation] obviously right after the season,” Nix said. “Non-weight-bearing for a couple of weeks, get back going. felt pretty good, was still having a little bit of an issue with bone spurs. What we did was — even though I probably could’ve gone again and [played] the whole season again — it was just aggravating me for too long. So what we did was, since I was a little bit ahead, thought it best to go ahead and decompress it a little bit. Then still had plenty of time to get back for the summer and to prepare for the season."
Nix indicated that he wanted to get the bone spurs cleaned up now, even if it meant missing organized team activities (OTAs). The 26-year-old quarterback is glad to have it out of the way now and he looks to be full-speed for training camp.
" knew that OTAs would be a good learning experience from [a] side perspective watching, getting sort of my mental reps and then getting all my physical reps as the summer and season comes," Nix said. " feel really good where I’m at. I’m actually sort of glad we got it all out of the way, don’t have to do it in the years to come. Football is a physical game, so there’s no telling what will come up. For right now, I feel really good about the steps we’re making and am going to be just fine for the season.”

After wrapping up minicamp, Nix and his teammates now have a summer break until training camp, which is expected to begin in late July.
