The Denver Broncos have a new offensive coordinator.
Just days after firing Joe Lombardi, Broncos head coach Sean Payton has promoted offensive pass game coordinator/quarterbacks coach Davis Webb to offensive coordinator.
Webb, 31, has had a remarkable rise since hanging up his cleats following the 2022 NFL season. The former backup quarterback has drawn interest from other clubs in each of the last two offseasons, and he was believed to be one of the top candidates for the Las Vegas Raiders' head coach opening this offseason.
Webb was a backup with the Buffalo Bills from 2019-2021, helping support Josh Allen. Buffalo asked him to retire and switch to coaching after the 2021 season, but he opted to remain in the NFL for another season.
Payton later convinced Webb to retire and join Denver's staff as a quarterbacks coach following the 2022 season. He has now received his second promotion in a two-year span, and it feels inevitable that he will one day become a head coach in the NFL.
Before hiring Webb, Denver also interviewed Bills quarterbacks coach Ronald Curry and Washington Commanders assistant head coach/offensive pass game coordinator Brian Johnson for the OC job. One or both coaches could still be candidates to join Payton's staff in other roles.
