The Denver Broncos will need to make decisions on nearly two dozen pending free agents next month, including restricted free agent cornerback Ja'Quan McMillian.
As a player with three accrued seasons, McMillian is eligible to receive an RFA tender from Denver. If the Broncos do not place an RFA tender on the cornerback, he will become an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins on March 11.
"Great story," Denver general manager George Paton said when asked about McMillian's status during his end-of-season press conference last month. "‘J-Mac,' we got him as a college free agent. I remember his first year, we started him outside against the Chargers in the last game of the year. And I’m just like, ‘Oh man, he’s 5-9, he’s going to play outside against his receivers.’ He played a great game, and you’re like, ‘Wow, maybe we have something here.’ Then he’s just gotten better, in the run game, pass game. We’re going to work through that as a staff in that deep dive, and kind of go through that and just keep that in-house.”
The Broncos have three options for RFA tenders: first-round ($8,107,000), second-round ($5,811,000) and right of first refusal ($3,547,000). If Denver places a second-round tender on McMillian, for example, they would receive a second-round pick if another team signs the cornerback and the Broncos opt not to match that team's offer.
The cheapest option is the right of first refusal, but if another team makes McMillian an offer that Denver does not match, they would not receive any draft compensation if they use the lowest tender. The Broncos could also not place any tender on McMillian, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent, but that seems unlikely.
McMillian has been an excellent slot cornerback for Denver, totaling 188 tackles, 24 pass breakups, six interceptions (including two returned for touchdowns), seven sacks and five forced fumbles. If they don't use an RFA tender, the Broncos could risk losing McMillian to another club this spring.
