The Denver Broncos made a surprising decision last spring when they used their first-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft to select Texas cornerback Jahdae Barron, despite being deep at his position.

Playing behind the likes of Pat Surtain, Riley Moss and Ja'Quan McMillian, Barron had a pretty quiet season, mostly in a rotational depth role.

“I think Jahdae, he played nickel, he played dime and he played a little corner," Denver general manager George Paton said after the season ended. "You can see all the traits. He was good for us, but probably not so good for him. He was drafted into maybe the deepest cornerback room in the league and he made his mark. He’s just going to keep growing and keep getting better."

Now going into Year 2, Barron is still facing the same stacked cornerback depth chart. Paton was asked about the team's cornerback situation at the NFL combine last month.

“I think it’s a great problem to have," Paton said. "I thought that Jahdae took big steps. Surtain gets hurt and he goes in and plays a major role and we win all three games [while PS2 was out]. He’s right on track. Ja’Quan had a great year. Our secondary had a [really good year]. It was Moss and Surtain [as well]. We love the depth. It think that it’s a great problem to have and I think Jahdae is going to keep getting better and better. He’s really talented.”

After placing a second-round tender on McMillian, the Broncos presumably plan to use him as their slot cornerback again in 2026. So Barron might be competing with Moss for an outside spot this summer. Denver could also consider trading Moss, who's entering the final year of his rookie contract, but having a deep cornerback room is a "great problem," as Paton noted.

For now, Barron appears to be in the same position he was last season, but he should get an opportunity to compete for a larger role this summer. Either by winning a job, a teammate going down or other contracts expiring, Barron should eventually get an opportunity to start with the Broncos.
