Even after signing Evan Engram during NFL free agency, the Denver Broncos are still in the tight end market as they approach the 2025 NFL draft.

Engram is an elite receiving tight end, so much so that he might end up lining up as a wide receiver more often than as a blocker in Sean Payton's offense. Engram is also set to turn 31 this fall and he has a two-year deal, so Denver would be wise to add a well-rounded long-term tight end in the draft next week.

“You generally don’t get both coming out of college, and I say that respectfully," Payton said at the NFL combine when asked about TE prospects who block well and make plays as receivers. "I will ask the scouts as they are reading the player — they usually typically do one really well rather than the other, and that is OK.

"Historically speaking, it has been a little easier to take the receiving tight end and work with him on his technique relative to run blocking than it is the run blocking tight end and make him a really good receiver. I’ve just seen that much more happen rather than the later.”

So, there's hope that the top receiving tight ends in this year's class could refine their blocking skills. Broncos general manager George Paton echoed Payton's stance.

“What’s the best thing they do?" Paton said when asked what characteristics he looks for in a tight end. "There are few that are mismatch types that can block. Typically, if you’re a receiving tight end, you can grow into a blocker. It’s hard if you’re just an in-line ‘Y’ to develop as a mismatch receiver. So you’re looking for just the traits to develop in your scheme.

"What are you looking for? Are you looking for the in-line ‘Y,’ or are you looking for that kind of receiving ‘F’? You’re not going to get — unless you’re picking really high — you’re not going to get one that can do both at a high level typically, but you can develop them. Can we develop this player?”

Draft Wire's top-ranked tight ends in this year's class are Tyler Warren, Colston Loveland, Elijah Arroyo, Harold Fannin, Mason Taylor, Terrance Ferguson and Gunnar Helm. We'll see if the Broncos come out of next week's class with one of those TEs on the roster.
