Broncos' disappointing 2025 free-agent signing named as trade candidate originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Denver Broncos placed a noticeable emphasis on the tight end position this offseason after last year's big-ticket free-agent signing, Evan Engram, came nowhere close to producing at the rate many expected.
Engram caught 50 passes for 461 yards and found the end zone just one time in his first season in Denver after signing a two-year, $23 million deal in free agency. The Broncos were expecting much more and there was even some chatter within the fanbase that the team could move on from him after one year, as they did with Dre Greenlaw.
While Engram wasn't terrible, he would have to be significantly better this coming season for his signing to be considered a win. After adding two tight ends in the draft (Justin Joly and Dallen Benyley), is there any chance the Broncos would consider trading Engram?
Jacob Infante of Pro Football Network feels that it is a possibility.
"The Denver Broncos brought in Evan Engram last offseason to serve as an upgrade at tight end, and while the team saw plenty of success, Engram failed to live up to expectations. His 28.8 receiving yards per game marked the second-lowest average he’s had in his NFL career. The Broncos doubled down on tight ends by drafting both Justin Joly and Dallen Bentley this year, which could push Engram out as he remains on the decline", wrote Infante.
Could Evan Engram be a legitimate trade candidate?
Engram will turn 32 years old in September and his best days in the league are likely behind him. If he has another season like he did last year, he won't be back in Denver in 2027 and the Broncos would get nothing in exchange.
That said, it's not like Sean Payton to place a huge amount of pressure on rookies and Joly and Bentley — two Day 3 picks — as he generally prefers veteran players to do the heavy lifting. But if either of those players has a breakout training camp, the idea can't be dismissed.

Still, it would be a surprise to see the Broncos move on from Engram, given the overall depth at the tight end position.
