At Augusta National Golf Club yesterday, Rory McIlroy captured his second Masters victory, becoming just the fourth golfer to win at the Masters in back-to-back years.

This morning, the British royal family’s official social media accounts congratulated the golfer, who is from Holywood, County Down, Northern Ireland. “Congratulations @McIlroyRory on your extraordinary back-to-back win at @TheMasters!” they posted, adding a flag in hole emoji and a trophy emoji. Last year, after his inaugural Masters victory, McIlroy featured on all letters postmarked with the Royal Mail for two days, and the royal family’s official accounts congratulated him on his “historic win.”

McIlroy met King Charles once before, when the Ryder Cup took place in Wales in 2010. The golfer and the then-Prince of Wales both attended a dinner (pictured above) at Cardiff Castle on the eve of the tournament.

In his press conference after his win, McIlroy said, “I thought it was so difficult to win last year because of trying to win the Masters and the grand slam, and then this year I realized it’s just really difficult to win the Masters. I tried to convince myself it was both.”

His parents, Gerry and Rosie, were in attendance at this year’s tournament after missing his win last year. “I caught myself on the golf course a couple of times thinking about them, and I was like no, not yet, not yet,” McIlroy said. “It’s really cool to have them here. They missed it last year, and the first thing I wanted to do was fly home to see them because I obviously wouldn’t be sitting up here if it wasn’t for them. I had to sort of convince them to come this year because they thought the reason I won last year was because they weren’t here.”
