Yet another young Celtic prospect has been lured by the riches and fame on offer down south, leaving us all wondering if it’s possible to actually keep hold of our up and coming young talent, at least long enough for them to make any sort of impact on the first team.
The latest youngster to make the move is talented 16 year old winger Erskine Rennie, who decided to join Fulham ahead of a host of fellow EPL sides, with some European clubs also said to have been interested in the Scottish youth international.
Football transfer guru Fabrizio Romano posted the news on his social media account on X, as he revealed the youngster committed to a long term contract at Craven Cottage, with Celtic receiving a compensation sum of just £100,000.
The teenager’s move comes hot on the heels of his fellow youth colleague Dara Jikiemi’s move to Liverpool and leaves us all wondering if the exodus of our most promising prospects will ever end.
It’s been a worrying trend post Brexit, with several clubs from down south picking up the best talent in the Scottish game on the cheap, with Celtic being the worst side effected with several young players being lured by the riches and fame on offer down south.

Several Celtic youth prospects have left for various clubs in England and beyond in the past decade. Highly rated players such as Ben Gannon Doak, Aidan Borland, Daniel Cummings, and now Erskine Rennie, and Dara Jikiemi have all left the club without making an impact on the first team. We can expect a lot more to follow suit in the future.
What can be done to stop this ever growing exodus? Is it down to the much better coaching infrastructures that they boast down south? Or is it due to the lucrative personal finance on offer?

My guess it’s a bit of both. But one things for sure, and that’s if we want to keep and nurture our best young talent, then we’ve got to do much, much more to make it worth their while to stick around.
That will involve a pathway to first team football that perhaps young players and their agents just don’t think exists. Brexit is a factor because since Scotland was pulled out of the EU against our wishes, alongside the rest of Britain, it has become more difficult for clubs in England and Scotland to lure the best talent from the EU nations.
They would have been attracted to the Premier League clubs with its glamour and financial status but that is much harder these days thanks to Farage & Co. So the Premier League clubs are left operating in their own market with only Scottish clubs available to raid.
