Baseball is, quite clearly, a business.
The most recent example came Saturday, Aug. 8, with the Milwaukee Brewers designating Bryse Wilson for assignment less than 24 hours after the right-hander threw three innings of one-hit baseball behind Shane Drohan in an 8-6 loss to the Minnesota Twins at American Family Field.
A nine-year veteran who rejoined the Brewers for his second tour of duty on July 10, Wilson posted a 2.63 ERA over six appearances (13 ⅔ innings) after making one appearance for the Philadelphia Phillies and two for the Chicago Cubs previously.
"Tough to send out a guy like Bryse after he really did his job multiple times, and has done his job here before and has been part of our success," manager Pat Murphy said. "He's a pro, though. He's a pro. He threw so few pitches yesterday that he could have come back in a day, but every day becomes critical.
"That's what it is."
Replacing Wilson in Milwaukee's bullpen is Lyon Richardson, a right-hander who was 1-2 with a 4.20 ERA, WHIP of 1.50 and 28 strikeouts in 13 appearances over 30 appearances at Class AAA Nashville.
The 26-year-old was a second-round pick of the Cincinnati Reds in 2018 and had spent his entire career in their organization until being designated for assignment on June 2, outrighted to Class AAA Louisville and electing free agency.
Richardson totaled 1 ⅔ innings over two outings in the major leagues for the Reds this season. He's coming off a 2025 in which he made a career-high 34 appearances out of Cincinnati's bullpen in 2025, going 0-3 with a 4.54 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 30 strikeouts in 37 ⅔ innings.
"I'd been in that organization since 2018 and it's pretty much my only experience," Richardson said. "I've been up and down with that team since '23 and built a pretty good relationship with them.
"(Being with the Brewers) is really interesting. It's a total 180 from where we were, and I'm really happy to be here."
Richardson throws a hard sinker (95.7 mph average) in his four-pitch repertoire but features, interestingly, a changeup he threw 40.5% of the time in 2025 while generating a 53.8% ground-ball rate.
"Being a starting pitcher in professional baseball, you're going to have to make adjustments and I think that was one of the pitches that really helped me get deeper into a lineup," Richardson said. "I've just been tweaking it over the years a little bit.
"Never learned it from anybody. Honestly, it was just me. Some of the cutter-slider stuff I definitely learned from other guys, but not the changeup."
Richardson is the 53rd player and 32nd pitcher to appear on the active roster for the Brewers this season. They used 56 total players and 32 pitchers in the entirety of 2025.
The Brewers also announced outfielder Sal Frelick began a minor-league rehab assignment with Nashville at Memphis.
