Brewers' Jacob Misiorowski on pace to accomplish feat not seen since 2019 originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The National League Cy Young Award race is shaping up to be one that could come down to the wire. Four different starting pitchers and possibly one reliever are vying for the award, as all four starters have an ERA of under 2.00 (minimum of 50.0 innings) and have at least one strikeout per inning.
According to MLB.com's Thomas Harrigan, since 1967, when the award was first introduced to both leagues, there has never been a tighter race where so many pitchers met so many benchmarks.
Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Jacob Misiorowski is one arm vying to win his first Cy Young Award. Misiorowski is Major League Baseball's strikeout leader -- Misiorowski has 100 strikeouts in 64.0 innings, with Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Cristopher Sanchez having 95 in 75.1 innings -- and sits second to Sanchez (1.47 ERA) in the National League in ERA (1.83).

Misiorowski also leads Major League Baseball in WHIP (0.83), batting average against (.152) and has allowed the fewest hits off him (34), which is eight more than Cincinnati Reds right-hander Chase Burns (42). One of the hardest throwing arms in baseball -- the 24-year-old is in the 99th percentile for fastball velocity (99.8 miles per hour) -- Misiorowski's strikeout ability (40.3% strikeout percentage) is putting him on track to strikeout 300 batters.
Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Jacob Misiorowski is on pace for 300 strikeouts
Throwing 57 pitches that were over 100 miles per hour in his last start versus the St. Louis Cardinals, Misiorowski is on pace to strike out 300+ this season. No pitcher has had 300+ strikeouts in Major League Baseball since former Houston Astros right-handers Justin Verlander (300) and Gerrit Cole (326) in 2019. The Missouri native is in the 99th percentile for his Whiff percentage (39%).
"Misiorowski tied a career high with 12 strikeouts against St. Louis, reaching double figures for the third time in four starts and becoming the first pitcher to notch 100 K’s this season," wrote Harrigan. "The lanky righty has struck out more than 40% of the batters he’s faced and has a chance to become the first pitcher to reach the 300-strikeout plateau since Gerrit Cole and Justin Verlander did it in 2019. He has a 1.83 ERA to boot, including a 0.29 ERA in May."
Given that a handful of other pitchers, including himself, are vying for the Cy Young Award, Misiorowski's potential achievement of 300 strikeouts in a season could help him beat out the competition. Misiorowski's main competitors are Sanchez, Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani (0.82 ERA), Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Paul Skenes (2.89), Atlanta Braves left-hander Chris Sale (2.01), and Burns (1.96).
