A judge in Lubbock, Texas, made a ruling that potentially could have impacted the Arizona Cardinals. Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby was granted a temporary injunction granting him eligibility for the 2026 college football season.

He had previously been ruled ineligible to play for the season by the NCAA after he admitted to a gambling addiction. He admitted to gambling on his teams dating back to his true freshman season at Indiana. He completed a 35-day rehab treatment for his addiction in Arizona.

After he was ruled ineligible, he went to court seeking to be able to play in 2026. Otherwise, he would likely apply for the NFL supplemental draft. But the injunction makes Sorsby eligible for 2026 with a two-game suspension to start the season. The NCAA will appeal the ruling.

What does the Brendan Sorsby ruling mean for the Cardinals?

With Sorsby returning to play college football, it means there is no need for the Cardinals to consider him in the supplemental draft.

They have a long-term need at quarterback and could seek one in the NFL draft next year. Sorsby surely would have been one they would consider. Even though they signed Gardner Minshew and drafted Carson Beck this offseason, it has been suggested they could target Sorsby in the supplemental draft and not have to use a first-round pick next year.

With this ruling, Sorsby will not be able to apply to the supplemental draft, which means this story is dead for now. The Cardinals won't even have an opportunity to take him next month.
