In a move that had been rumored for weeks, the Tampa Bay Lightning signed defenseman John Carlson to a two-year contract worth $17 million.
Carlson, who spent the majority of his career with the Washington Capitals, made his desire to return to the Eastern United States very clear as free agency approached. Although the reigning Stanley Cup Champion Carolina Hurricanes traded for his rights at the NHL Draft, the two sides were unable to reach an agreement and Julien BriseBois signed Carlson to fill the hole left by the departing Darren Raddysh.
Carlson, 36, will play a major role for the Lightning as the Bolts will likely look for him to help run the power play while also eating quite a few minutes on the top pairing. While his cap hit is similar to that of the departing Raddysh, the term fits the Lightning's timeline much better and helps them keep their contention window open.
Last season, Carlson scored 14 goals and 60 points in 71 games split between the Capitals and the Anaheim Ducks.
