CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Bulldogs forward Braxton Williams has been ballin’ the last three weeks….but basketball wasn’t his first love.
“I grew up a baseball guy. So I’ve been playing since I was three and I stopped playing my 10th grade year,” Williams said.
A natural athlete Williams give up the cork and yarn for the round ball.
“I just tried it and i saw how good I was and I just knew I was going to have a future in basketball so I kind of shifted towards it.”
As gifted as Braxton was on the diamond or hardwood….like changing sports….his playing career has taken a different path as well.
“It was good but at the same time it was pretty rocky, I had some up and down years at both schools I came from. I wouldn’t take that nothing in the world. I was blessed to be there and God put me in that situation for a reason and it built me into who I am today.”
After being named the Alabama JUCO player of the year in 2023…Williams took his shooting prowess with him to DII’s Valdosta State….where he averaged double figures in both seasons with the blazers.
“They played a real up-tempo system, and I thought he could come in here and knock down some three’s for us. But, I thought he really knew how to compete and play hard. It was a winning program. A program I was familiar with and I thought he could bring some of that elements to us and that confidence is starting to show up,” Conroy said.
I’d say so…this season at El Cid, Williams leads the dogs in scoring…really turning it on the past three weeks as he’s scored over 20 points in four different contests.
“Just teammates, they trust me, I trust them. I feel like we just all trust each other a lot lately and now the ball’s just kind of rolling my way and I feel like sooner or later it’s going to be somebody else and we’re all going to be there for each other,” Williams said.
From Alabama…to Georgia…now here in Charleston…Braxton is well traveled and is continuing to play very well.
“Being here in this environment, I feel like it built me as a person more. You can never be too good of a person, but being here has built me as a person more. I appreciate coach, donors, and members of the staff for that.”
