The Atlanta Braves entered the season hoping Spencer Strider could help anchor the rotation once again. Instead, the former Clemson pitcher is headed for another extended stint on the sidelines.

After leaving his start against the New York Mets last week, Strider was placed on the injured list with inflammation in his right elbow. The organization sent the hard-throwing right-hander for further evaluation with Dr. Keith Meister, one of baseball’s most respected orthopedic surgeons.

The results offered some reason for optimism.

“Meister found no structural damage when he evaluated Strider’s right elbow on Monday,” the Braves reported.

That finding means Strider has avoided another major elbow procedure for now. However, his return remains a long way off. Atlanta announced he will not throw for four weeks before undergoing another MRI to determine the next steps in his recovery.

“The noted surgeon advised the pitcher to rest for a month and then undergo another MRI exam,” the Braves wrote. “If the scan is clean, Strider will be cleared to begin a throwing program.”

Even in the most favorable scenario, Strider still faces weeks of rebuilding arm strength and completing rehab assignments before rejoining the major league club.

The Braves acknowledged that “a late August return seems possible,” though they added that “an early September return might be more realistic.”

For Strider, it’s another frustrating setback in a career that has already featured multiple elbow injuries. He underwent Tommy John surgery during his Tigers’ career in 2019 and later had an internal brace procedure in 2024.

Despite the injury challenges, Strider’s talent has never been in question. The 2023 All-Star led Major League Baseball in wins and strikeouts that season, cementing himself as one of the game’s premier power pitchers when healthy.
