Braves predicted to sign $38M strikeout ace, Cy Young-caliber arm after $15M Jurickson Profar dump originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Atlanta Braves were dealt a major blow Tuesday morning when it was announced that Jurickson Profar would be suspended for the entire season due to another PED violation. Profar will forfeit the $15 million salary he was owed, and the suspension could mark the end of his time in Atlanta.
“Atlanta Braves designated hitter Jurickson Profar is facing a 162-game suspension after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug for the second time in the last year, sources told ESPN on Tuesday. Profar, 33, is the sixth player to receive a 162-game ban for PED use since Major League Baseball increased the penalty for two-time offenders to a full season in 2014. He will forfeit the entirety of his $15 million salary,” Passan wrote.
Reaction around the league was swift, and some did not hold back in their criticism. One Braves reporter even labeled it the worst free-agent signing in franchise history.
“Considering the context and circumstances – with the slim chance based on precedent that a 162-game suspension isn't forthcoming – I can confidently say that Jurickson Profar is the worst free-agent signing in Braves history,” Braves reporter Grant McAuley wrote.
One potential silver lining is that the Braves now have financial flexibility. The question becomes how they will choose to use it. One name to monitor is free-agent starter Lucas Giolito.
“Adding Lucas Giolito to the rotation and beefing up that part of the roster feels like a must. There isn’t an absolutely great free agent hitter left although they shouldn’t overlook the idea of signing Tommy Pham off of another stable year where he was a Gold Glove finalist in left field for the Pittsburgh Pirates,” Rising Apple’s Tim Boyle wrote.
Adding Giolito would provide much-needed depth to the Braves’ rotation. However, it would not address the void left in the outfield, and at this stage, there are limited impact options available.
Atlanta must determine its next move quickly with the season fast approaching. Time is not on the Braves’ side, and the organization suddenly finds itself navigating a difficult situation.
