Braves legend Craig Kimbrel gets worst possible future outlook after being let go by Mets originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Counting stats in Major League Baseball are just as important as anything else when it comes to making the Hall of Fame. While some guys get in for other reasons, there aren't really many Hall of Famers out there who are in because they don't have elite numbers.
That's the tough part of being a really good player in Major League Baseball, as a lot of those guys do things for a very long time.
Sadly, one of those guys who many were hoping would make the Hall of Fame one day, especially most Atlanta Braves fans, was Craig Kimbrel.
Kimbrel, who was undoubtedly one of the top relievers in Major League Baseball during his time with the Braves from 2010 to 2014, has had success in other parts throughout his career.
However, since the 2019 campaign, he's been relatively below average, posting a 3.94 ERA and just 107 saves.
Kimbrel was on a trajectory to be a Hall of Fame reliever, but according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, it seems like that ship has sailed after his failed attempt at playing with the New York Mets.
“Veteran reliever Craig Kimbrel’s bid for the Hall of Fame likely ended when he was dumped by the New York Mets, his 10th different team, after yielding a 6.00 ERA and 1.467 WHIP. Unless another team picks him up, his career saves total stalls at 440 with a 22.5 WAR, short of Cooperstown standards,” Bob Nightengale of USA Today wrote.
At this point in his career, at 37 years old, it's very unlikely that he even has a close chance of getting close to the numbers he needs because of these poor seasons.
It's always possible that a team will give him a look because of what he's done throughout his career, but the nine-time All-Star is probably going to end up not being a Hall of Famer.
