Borussia Dortmund playmaker Julian Brandt is leaving the club at the end of the season, managing director Lars Ricken confirmed on Saturday.
The Germany player set up Maxi Beier for the winning goal in Saturday's 2-1 Bundesliga win at Cologne but has also often flattered to deceive for the Black and Yellows.
The 29-year-old former Bayer Leverkusen man has been at Dortmund since 2019.
"There were open discussions and it was then agreed that the expiring contract would not be renewed," Ricken told Sky TV.
"I think we can only be grateful to him. He will turn 30 in a few weeks, so we can reorientate ourselves a bit, which could be an opportunity for both sides."
Dortmund are trying to extend with Germany centre back Nico Schlotterbeck amid interest from top European clubs. But any cash saved by not extending Brandt is not a factor.
"I don't think it will impact Nico's decision," Ricken said.
Emre Can, out with a cruciate knee ligament tear, will be offered an extension with his deal running down.
"We will offer him a deal," Ricken added. "We will wait for his operation."
