Islands baseball coach Brandon Collins stepped down at the end of the season after eight years leading the Sharks and Lamar County assistant Tim Jones has been hired to lead the program.
Collins said he took a job with his family and it was a tough decision to leave his role with the Shark baseball squad.
He picked up his 100th career win this season when senior Dylan Stewart beat Portal with a three-inning perfect game on March 28.
Collins was a standout catcher during his high school career at Calvary Day and went on to play at South Georgia and then the University of South Carolina at Beaufort in college. His father, Marty Collins, was an assistant for his son during his tenure at Islands.
"I was offered a position in a family business that I couldn't turn down," Collins said. "I had to take it because it was the best thing for my family. I loved coaching the baseball team at Islands, so it was bittersweet to have to step away. I loved my players, their families and all the people I worked with at Islands. But it was time for me to spend more time with my family."
Collins had previous stints as an assistant coach at Calvary Day and Benedictine before taking over at Islands.
Tim Jones is set to take over the program next season. Jones has been an assistant coach at Lamar County High School the last eight years, after an eight-year stint as an assistant at Gordon State College.
Jones, 41, was a catcher in his prep days playing at St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He went on to play at Piedmont College.
"I'm looking forward to getting started at Islands," Jones said. "This is a dream job for me and my family. I came here to play Islands as a softball coach and there was something about the place that hit me. I thinks the area is a hotbed for baseball talent and there's something special about it. Coach Collins has done a great job establishing a successful program and we want to carry on that tradition."
