The Cincinnati Reds were defeated 1-0 by the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night. Despite the loss, starting pitcher Brady Singer performed well. Singer, a trade candidate, gave his potential trade value a boost with the outing.
The 29-year-old allowed only one earned run across seven and 1/3 innings of work on the mound against a talented Phillies ball club. Singer also surrendered only four hits while striking out five hitters.
The problem was that he did not receive any run support. Jesús Luzardo worked seven innings of shutout baseball while striking out 11. It was a pitcher's duel that Luzardo won, but Singer impressed nonetheless.
However, it has been a challenging campaign for Singer overall. Even with his strong outing on Thursday, Singer still has just a 4.72 ERA across 18 appearances. He has also recorded 76 strikeouts in his 89.2 innings of work.
So, will Singer be a popular trade candidate? In all reality, he may draw serious interest.
There are not many true sellers this trade deadline. Singer also has a proven track record. At the very least, he has been reliable when it comes to starting games every fifth day. Singer has recorded exactly 32 starts in each of the past two years, and he's appeared in at least 27 games in each of the past four seasons.
Many contenders around the MLB world would not have a problem with acquiring a veteran right-handed hurler with plenty of big league experience. Of course, his stellar start on Thursday against the Phillies will only further intrigue contending ball clubs.
The Reds fell to 42-50 with the defeat. At 42-50, they are in last place in the National League Central standings. While the NL Wild Card remains a possibility, this Reds team is likely going to end up selling before the MLB trade deadline.
They do not have to enter a complete rebuild. Cincinnati has talented young players on the roster. Trading veterans such as Singer would give them even more prospects for the future, though.
Up next for the Reds is a three-game series at home against the Chicago Cubs. It will be the final series for Cincinnati before the upcoming MLB All-Star break. The Reds would obviously love to play a strong series before the break.
