Brackley Town manager Gavin Cowan is a leading candidate to replace Michael Appleton at Shrewsbury Town, reports BBC Radio Shropshire.

Cowan, 44, is a former Salop defender and made 30 appearances for the club between March 2005 and January 2007.

He has been in charge of National League side Brackley since May 2023, taking the club up from National League North in 2024-25 as champions.

The Saints are currently 15th in the fifth tier, six points clear of the relegation zone.

Shrewsbury parted company with Appleton on Wednesday with the club two points above the relegation zone in League Two after a run of one win in 11 matches.

It is understood a new head coach will be in place before Saturday's home game with Barnet.
