QUINCY – The Branch County Area Best Track and Field meet has undergone some major changes over the past five years, going from an end of the year meet where only certain individuals qualify to the all compassing early season meet it is now.
That meet drew the four largest teams from the county to Quincy High School on Saturday to see who is indeed Branch County’s Best for a day full of track and field action.
The Coldwater Cardinal boys paced the country on the day, securing wins in 13 of the 17 events ran on Saturday.
Taking wins for Coldwater were freshman Evan Lewis in the 100 meter dash in a time of 11.36 seconds; Claudel Wischmeyer, first place in the 400 in a time of 54.38 seconds; Luke Aerts, first in the 800 in a time of 2:07.94; Drew Vanderpuyl, first place in the 1600 in a time of 4:58.11; Kendall Austin, first place in the 300 hurdles in a time of 42.65 seconds; the 400 relay team of Dayne Knap, Kaden Lewis, Evan Lewis, and Naseem Taha, first place in 46.12 seconds; the 800 relay team of Lewis, Lewis, Knap and Jackson Reilly, first place in a time of 1:34.34; the 1,600 relay team of Wischmeyer, Mason Sabaitis, Vanderpuyl, and Landon Dirschell, first place in a time of 3:45.82; the 3200 relay team of Wischmeyer, Sam Pernia, Luke Aerts, and Vanderpuyl, first place in a time of 8:29.62; Garrett McVicker, first place in the shot put with a throw of 48 feet, 3.5 inches; Reilly, first place in the discus with a throw of 134 feet, 0 inches; and Kendall Austin, first place in the long jump with a jump of 20 feet, 8.25 inches.
Additional winners include Caden Hughes of Union City, first place in the 200 in a time of 24.53; Ben Gautsche of Union City, first place in the 3200 in a time of 10:39.09; Clayton Benson of Quincy, first place in the 110 hurdles in 15.25; Noah Rufenacht of Quincy, first place in the high jump with a jump of 6 feet, 4 inches; and Corey Turner of Quincy, first place in the pole vault with a vault of 14 feet, 0 inches.
