The hits keep on coming for the Boston Red Sox' already depleted starting pitching depth as All-Star Ranger Suarez exited Sunday night's series finale against the Los Angeles Angels with an apparent injury. Here's what we know, prior to the conclusion of the contest.
It was an uncharacteristically shaky night for the now two-time All-Star who was announced as a member of the American League team on Saturday, as the Los Angeles lineup got to him early for three runs on five hits through the first two innings. After a three-run blast off the bat of Willson Contreras in the top of the third inning gave the Red Sox a two-run lead at 5-3, Suarez appeared well on his way to posting the zero the Red Sox desperately needed.
The 30-year-old made quick work of the first two batters he faced in the home half of the third, striking out Angels' designated hitter Jorge Soler and second baseman Oswald Peraza before Los Angeles right fielder Jo Adell hit a slow chopper toward Suarez. The veteran pitcher leapt as the ball bounced out of his reach and into the glove of the waiting shortstop Tsung-Che Cheng, who was unable to get the out.
Upon further review, it appeared that Suarez came up short on the leap, favoring his midsection upon landing. After a brief conversation with interim manager Chad Tracy and the Boston training staff, Suarez was removed from the game.
Shortly after his removal, the Red Sox announced that Suarez was removed with left abductor tightness.
The injury to Suarez comes just four days after fellow lefty Connelly Early was placed on the 15-day injured list with left elbow inflammation, leaving an already thin Boston rotation even thinner.
The Red Sox are already without starters Garrett Crochet, Johan Oviedo, Patrick Sandoval, and Kutter Crawford, along with Early, thanks to injuries, though Sandoval is expected to be activated to make Early's next start.
After Sandoval's presumptive activation, the Red Sox' starting depth gets stretched especially thin, with recently demoted Brayan Bello being the lone pitcher in Triple-A Worcester who has started at the major league level. Bello would be the likely replacement should Suarez require a trip to the injured list.
Whether Suarez's injury is bad enough to warrant a trip to the injured list remains to be seen. We'll know more about the 30-year-old's condition when Tracy meets with the media after the game.
His availability at the All-Star Game on July 14 is also in serious doubt.

Ahead of Sunday night's series finale in Anaheim, Tracy told reporters, including Tim Healey of the Boston Globe, that the power-hitting first baseman Triston Casas was shut down from swinging after suffering a wrist injury while working his way back from a torn patellar tendon suffered in May 2025.
The Red Sox are 39-48 and in last place in the American League East.
