BOSTON — After Payton Pritchard made a shot in Game 2 against the Magic in front of the visiting team bench, he glanced over for a split second before making his way back up the court. Someone was talking trash, so Pritchard had a response.
The C’s and Magic have been chippy thus far, especially after Kentavious Caldwell-Pope’s hard foul on Jayson Tatum back in Game 1. There were some more fireworks in Game 2 as tensions rose between Caldwell-Pope and Al Horford. But for Pritchard, he revealed an old friend was the one yapping away from the bench.
“Moe Wagner,” Pritchard said. “But he played with us, so we have a relationship. But he likes to talk a lot. He always talks, but that’s my guy.”
Now, that’s not to be confused with Franz Wagner, one of the Magic’s best players. His brother, a former Celtic, is also on the team. Moe Wagner was actually having a breakout season, averaging 12.9 points and 4.9 rebounds in 30 games before tearing his ACL in December. He could’ve been a threat to Pritchard’s Sixth Man of the Year campaign had he kept playing.
Moe Wagner also played for the Celtics briefly as part of the 2020-21 season, Pritchard’s rookie season. He was actually part of the three-team deal that brought Luke Kornet over to the Celtics. Wagner ended up getting waived by the Celtics in April 2021 before latching on with the Magic, which is where he’s been ever since.
Wagner also has a reputation as a trash talker around the league, so him poking at Pritchard is no surprise. He’ll look to heal up and continue to be a factor for the Magic, alongside his brother, going forward once he’s past rehab.
Pritchard also got the last word in anyway after the Celtics beat the Magic 109-100 in Game 2 on Wednesday. The C’s now hold a 2-0 series lead as the first round shifts to Orlando for Games 3 and 4. On the Celtics’ side, they will hope Jayson Tatum heals up his right wrist.
