Sue Hall’s return to Bobby Bowden’s Killearn Estates home brought a rush of fond memories, tinged at times with somber reflection — and a few surprises.

Bowden’s longtime administrative assistant earlier this month met with members of the Wiregrass Auction Group at the home as preparations continue for the Bowden Legacy Auction, scheduled for late March.

As she walked through the home, Hall shared memories and stories while taking in the memorabilia — from game‑day and season keepsakes to cherished family heirlooms — belonging to Bobby and Ann Bowden.

In addition, Bowden’s Killearn Estates home, where he and his wife Ann settled in January 1976 after his hire from West Virginia, will also be auctioned off – along with everything inside.

"It certainly brought back a lot of great memories – I've been in that house so many times over the years," Hall said. "But it was also kind of sad, knowing he's no longer here."

Bowden, who guided FSU to two national championships during his remarkable 34-years years at the school and yet still kept his name and number listed in the local phone book, passed away in 2021 at the age of 91.

Ann, meanwhile, celebrated her 93rd birthday last September.

Hall, who spent 24 years as Bowden’s administrative assistant, reminisced about the early days at the Bowden home. Known for his folksy Southern charm, Bowden and his wife, Ann, regularly hosted recruits, their families, and the families of his coaching staff on Friday nights during campus visits.

The main dining room table was set with the family’s crystal china and silverware and always featured an array of desserts prepared by Extra Point Club members — including Hall’s signature banana pudding.

“That’s the first thing Coach Bowden would look for: ‘Where’s the banana pudding, Sue?’” Hall said with a laugh during a video interview with Mark Manley, president and owner of Wiregrass Auction Group of Thomasville, Georgia.

Hall said she was also surprised by the sheer number of books Bowden kept. Manley noted that his team has cataloged more than 1,000 books from Bowden’s football office, home and storage units. In addition to reading his Bible daily, Bowden voraciously consumed books on military history, particularly World War II.

“I don't know where he found the time, but I'm sure he read every one of them,” Hall said.
