Bo Nix clearly played a big role in the Denver Broncos landing coveted tight end Evan Engram during NFL free agency.
During an interview with former teammate Bennie Fowler on the DNVR Sports podcast last week, Engram revealed that Nix was the first Broncos player who reached out to the tight end after he was cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars in March.
When he arrived at the team's facility for a free agent visit, Engram had lunch with Nix, and he came away impressed with the quarterback.
“Even having lunch with him, just kind of briefly, he was sitting down with one of the trainers and they were having a conversation about his throwing progression in the offseason and the little minor things he’s working on," Engram told Fowler. "That was music to my ears. Hearing the mindset, even as just a fly on the wall. I wasn’t even in the conversation, I was just kind of observing him and his work and his work ethic and his work process.”
Engram appreciated Nix's mentality even in the cafeteria, but it was the quarterback's film that really closed the deal.
“My biggest thing was just watching his tape,” Engram said. “I sat down, downloaded a couple of games for the flight, sat down and watched some more with [quarterbacks coach] Davis [Webb] in the building.”
Engram came away from that film session gushing with praise for 25-year-old QB.
“He has everything that it takes to be great in this league,” Engram told Fowler. “The biggest thing that stood out to me was his presence in the pocket. He’s very calm, very collected. When the pocket does break down, the plays he can make on his feet while having his eyes downfield is something that you have to continue to put great talent around because that is a weapon. That is a true weapon.”
Engram later praised Nix's poise and swagger.
“When you put all of those things together, there’s something special there," Engram said. "Obviously, the rapport he has in the building. The way the coaches talk about him, it was something that really meant a lot to me as well. Really excited to get to work with Bo. He has a bright future ahead of him. Whatever I can do to make his job easier and to help him evolve to be the great player he can become is a great opportunity for myself.”
Nix turned down an invite to the Pro Bowl as an alternate last season after surpassing 4,200 yards and scoring 34 touchdowns as a rookie. He's now going into Year 2 and the Broncos have brought in Engram -- a two-time Pro Bowler -- to give him another weapon. It wouldn't be surprising to see Engram emerge as one of Nix's favorite targets in 2025, and it's clear that the tight end already thinks highly of his new quarterback.
