Bo Bichette’s declining value could give Red Sox chance to land perfect offensive fit originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Boston Red Sox are in a bit of a bind this season, as they were expected to be a true top contender, and have ended up falling way short of that. They are 29-39, and five games behind the final spot in the AL Wild Card.

The most visible reason for this is Boston’s lack of stud bats in the offense, which they were supposed to pursue this offseason. Luckily, it seems one of them may be up for grabs again next offseason, as it was reported that New York Mets All-Star Bo Bichette may be opting out of his contract after 2026.

Coming off a World Series run with the Toronto Blue Jays, Bichette was supposed to be the bat to complement Juan Soto after New York lost Pete Alonso. However, this season, Bichette has been anything but that.

He’s slashing .236/.283/.361/.661 with nine doubles, eight home runs, and 40 RBI in 70 games played. While this is on the low side, keep in mind, a lot of the Mets aren’t doing well, which is shown in their 31-29 record.

This is actually good for the Red Sox, though, as it lowers his asking price if he does opt out. Plus, his swing is built for Fenway Park, which is probably something he knows as well.

Bichette could thrive in Fenway. He’s a pull hitter, which isn’t serving him well at Citi Field, with left field being 358ft to the wall, and deep left-center being 385ft.

In Boston, left field is only 310ft away, with deep center-left being 379ft. Sure, the Green Monster is there, but Bichette would abuse it for doubles and easier home runs.

The proof for this is from his Blue Jay days: he slashed .329 with 47 hits, six being homers, for 30 RBI and 27 runs scored in 35 games at Fenway.

The Sox should try for a “prove it” deal

If he does opt out, the Sox need to offer him a “prove it” deal, like they did Alex Bregman; a one-year contract to prove he’s bounced back, with an opt-out for the next season.

However, if he does bounce back, unlike with Bregman, the Red Sox need to re-sign him. Then, he could be either at second base or shortstop, and Marcelo Mayer would fill the other spot.

Hopefully, the chance presents itself, and the Red Sox jump at the opportunity.
