The Toronto Blue Jays know exactly how critical it is going to be to acquire a starter or two at the trade deadline. The rotation has been plagued with injuries all season long.

The Blue Jays know that they are underperforming considering the offseason they had and their 2025 World Series appearance. Toronto is one of the few teams confirmed to be in the mix for Tarik Skubal.

“Now that it’s becoming inevitable that the free-falling Detroit Tigers may have no choice but to trade two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal at the deadline, rival executives believe the bidding will come down to four finalists that not only can afford the remainder of his $32 million contract, but will also be willing to give up prized prospects: The Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale wrote.

With Skubal being the most sought-after name at the deadline, there are plenty of other options that would come at a lower cost. Robbie Ray is one to watch in a potential reunion.

“The Toronto Blue Jays have a handful of starters on the Injured List right now, including Dylan Cease, Shane Bieber and Max Scherzer. If there is a team out there that could use a starter right now, it would be Toronto. Ray is a two-time All-Star and former Cy Young Award winner with a career 3.96 ERA in 13 seasons. He's the exact type of hurler that would help the Blue Jays try to make another deep run,” SI’s Patrick McAvoy wrote.

The Blue Jays would be smart to consider bringing back Ray, as he is having a solid campaign this season. Also, the best season of his career came in Toronto in 2021, when he won the Cy Young Award.

Ray is on a $115 million expiring contract, so it could simply be a short-term move for this season while they work to get the rotation healthy. He has already had success with the Blue Jays, so a reunion could make sense. This is the type of deal that could help get Toronto back on track toward a World Series run.
