Blue Jays predicted to make blockbuster trade with Red Sox to impact Yankees originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
A lot of talk for the Toronto Blue Jays seems to be centered around who they're going to add on the mound, specifically in the starting rotation.
Not that the Blue Jays have a bad starting rotation, but with some of the injuries they've dealt with throughout the year, and players only getting older, with guys like Max Scherzer struggling, it would make sense to at least add another starter.
All contending teams in Major League Baseball are very interesting to watch. They're in a position to at least make the playoffs if things go as planned, but adding at the deadline will help with that.
Instead of upgrading their rotation, it was recently floated that they could look to improve in the bullpen, with Aroldis Chapman's name being floated. Chapman, now 38 years old, has an argument to be the best closer in Major League Baseball.
“With the Boston Red Sox likely headed towards a throw-away season, they currently hold a superior asset that could become a huge difference maker for the Blue Jays. That player is veteran reliever Aroldis Chapman.
“At 38 years of age, Chapman has dramatically turned back the clock and more this season,” Edward Eng wrote.
It's crazy to look at what Chapman has done throughout the year, as he has 28 strikeouts in 20.2 innings and an ERA of 0.43.
A WHIP of 0.92, and there's going to be a strong argument to be made that whoever gets Chapman is going to be in a very good position come October. It remains uncertain whether the Boston Red Sox will move on from him, but if the Blue Jays get involved here, I'd like it a lot.
