Blue Jays continue to be right about Bo Bichette, and this contract problem shows that originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
When the New York Mets initially signed Bo Bichette to a three-year deal, there was definitely a feeling that he wasn't going to be on the team for more than a year. Even if he decided to return to the Mets, it likely would have taken a restructured contract or something of that nature to keep him around long-term.
Bichette signed a three-year, $126 million deal, but the contract included player opt-outs after the first and second seasons.
Because of those opt-outs, many now believe there's a possibility not only that he will be on the Mets for the next two seasons, but also that New York will be stuck with a contract it wasn't expecting.
"The player option in Bo Bichette’s contract makes his trade candidacy extremely complicated. For the Mets, they probably always suspected he’d be good enough this year and end up back in free agency. Because the season hasn’t gone well for him whatsoever, Bichette seems more like someone who’ll opt in and eat up a large part of the payroll again in 2027,” Tim Boyle wrote.
That's unfortunate that everything has gone the way it has for Bichette and the Mets, but the former Toronto Blue Jays slugger certainly hasn't played up to par.
In fact, the way he's played only validates the reasoning for the Blue Jays moving on from him, as he's hitting just .228 on the season with five home runs and 42 strikeouts. Toronto seemingly made the right decision, and as a result, the Mets have one of the worst contracts in baseball at the moment.
